Algology

Algology

According to the classification of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), pain is defined as “an unpleasant, specific sensation originating from any organ of the body, whether or not it is associated with an organic cause, and encompassing all of a person's past experiences.”

In the past, pain was considered merely a symptom. Today, however, it is recognized as a disease in its own right. Pain is classified into two main types: acute and chronic. Pain that persists for more than six months is referred to as chronic pain. Rather than serving as a warning signal, chronic pain is regarded as an independent disease.

The medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of pain is called Algology. The term is derived from the Greek words algos (pain) and logos (science). Algology has been recognized as a distinct medical specialty worldwide for more than 35 years. In Azerbaijan, this specialty was first introduced at our hospital.
